Time

All day

Organizer

North American Vegetarian Society
When: Annually, October 1.
On 1 October, we reflect on vegetarianism on World Vegetarian Day. The day was an idea of the North American Vegetarian Society and has existed since 1978.

Mission

The mission was defined as followed in 1977:

“To promote the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism.”

The day is linked to two months ending in November and designed to raise awareness. The events or events are mainly focused on the United States and have a relation to this topic. The most special ones take place on 24 and September 27: Hug a Vegan and Hug a Vegetarian. Some events or events are now also known outside the United States. World Vegetarian Day is one of them.

About the name

The name is World Vegetarian Day. You might think it would be World Vegetarianism Day. However, it was decided the name would be World Vegetarian Day instead. One thing would definitely not be right: “World Vegetarian Day,” since the day is not about the people (vegetarians). It’s about vegetarianism. So, World Vegetarian Day is right.
