World Rivers Day
Organizer
World Rivers Day
When: Annually, last Sunday of September.
World River Day takes place on the last Sunday in September and draws attention to rivers worldwide.
Origin and purpose
The inspiration for World Rivers Day was the United Nations (UN) Water for Life Decade project. The day is an awareness day for rivers worldwide and the need for clean rivers. It’s also a day to focus on the importance of keeping rivers and their surrounding landscapes as they should be or remain intact.
The idea for the day came from Mark Angelo. Angelo was formerly with the Rivers Institute at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and associated with the BCIT’s Fish, Wildlife and Recreation Program. More information on what Angelo has been up to can be found on this website.
What do do on this day?
Enjoy the river or rivers near where you live. Look at the landscape and think whether you can contribute something to it. For example, see if you might be able to clean up litter. If you want more tips, check out worldriversday.com.
