World Rhino Day
Other organizers
When: Annually, September 22.
World Rhino Day is an initiative of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and takes place annually on 22 September. The day has been recognised as a special day by the United Nations (UN). On this day, rhinos are in the spotlight because this species is not doing well.
It takes a while to find the information on the WWF website when it comes to this day. At least the information can be found at this location. At least the information can be found via a dedicated UN website. The information is just very limited. That does not apply to the information offered via World Rhino Day.
Endangered species
The rhino population is not doing well. There are only five species of rhinos left. All these species are endangered.
When you think of a rhino, you think of the horn and right then you think of the threat. Yet this need not always be the main reason for the threat. In many cases, it is the reason. Climate change also plays an important role. In addition, the habitat is getting smaller and smaller. That is why only an estimated 27,000 rhinos remain1.
Alles bij elkaar zorgt dit ervoor dat er nog maar 27.000 neushoorns op de wereld te vinden zijn volgens de Nederlandstalige website van het Wereld Natuurfonds.
Medicine without scientific evidence
In Asia, rhino horn when ground is considered a medicine. There is no scientific evidence of any medicinal effect from this.
To focus the attention on the protection on these grazing giants, there is World Rhinoceros Day. Perhaps one day there will be a time when the day will be there just to celebrate. The day will then consist of commemorating the fact that the population was guaranteed.
