On July 11, the world reflects on the world’s population on International Population Day (English: World Population Day). This day is a day of awareness, to emphasise that a growing world population leads to challenges, and pressures on our living environment and the environment.

July 11, 1987

Contrary to what some people think, International Population Day is not the result of a July 11, 1987 decision. Back then, it was Five Billion Day. That was the day an estimated five billion people lived on Earth. That day did provide the impetus for International Population Day. Call it an inspiration for the day.

UNDP

The day is an initiative of the UN Development Programme (United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The aim is to draw attention to the overpopulation of our planet and the problems this causes. This leads to shortages of water and food, depletion of nature and poor living conditions, among other things. It can also be a basis for the emergence of conflicts.
