World Listening Day
Organizer
World Listening Project (WLP)
When: annually, July 18.
In honour of the birth anniversary of Raymond Murray Schafer, World Listening Day is here. A day when the World Listening Project (WLP) wants to remind us of the importance of the sounds of nature.
Raymond Murray Schafer
Raymond Murray Shafer (also known as R. Murray Schafer) (July 18, 1933 – August 14, 2021) was a Canadian composer, musician and environmentalist. He was also the founder of the World Listening Project (WSP) in the 1960s, whose goal was to find solutions for an ecological balance in the relationship between humans and their “sonic environment.” More on this is described in the Canadian Encyclopedia, which offers a aparticular page on this topic.
What should you think about this day?
On this day, it’s actually about listening so. Only what do you listen to? At least to nature. Everything else comes after that. After that you might hear animals, maybe other people. Maybe more. Think of the day as a rest, whenever possible. If possible. Maybe it is not possible to retreat on that day. At least not all day.
If you don’t have the opportunity to listen all day, there may be times when you can do so. This is also important for this day. Moments when you can listen.
