The International Day marking the founding of the United Nations (UN) International Organisation for Food and Agriculture is called World Food Day. This day is on 16 October every year.
Establishment of FAO
On 16 October 1945, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) was established. The organisation’s goal is to fight hunger. Since its inception, that goal has never been achieved. Nevertheless, it is something that takes centre stage on this day every year, in addition to highlighting food security. For FAO’s programme, the World Food Programme, the organisation was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020.
World Food Day has been around since 1979. Since 1981, the day has featured a theme, highlighting action points for the year.
