When: Annually, October 8.
World Dyslexia Day takes place annually on October 8. This day is dedicated to raising awareness of dyslexia.
Worldwide, this day draws attention to dyslexia and creates awareness of the challenges posed by dyslexia. It also draws attention to the unique talents of individuals with dyslexia. Dyslexia should not be or be a barrier to limiting those individuals. It is an opportunity to advocate for greater understanding and support.
What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a learning disability that affects the ability to read and spell accurately and fluently. People with dyslexia often have difficulty recognising words, decoding text and spelling. Despite these challenges, many dyslexics have strong visual, creative and problem-solving skills.
Not just one goal for this day
There is no one goal for World Dyslexia Day. There are several goals for this day.
- Raise awareness: Many people do not fully understand what dyslexia entails. Through education and information, misunderstandings and stigmas can be reduced.
- Provide support: It is important to support dyslexics with the right tools and strategies, both in education and in the workplace.
- Celebrating talents: Dyslexics often have unique talents and skills. This day encourages recognising and celebrating these talents.
Activities on this day
During International Dyslexia Day, various activities and events are organised worldwide.
It is also possible to organise activities yourself. Think of education and support. Of course, it is also possible to participate in the activities by supporting them as volunteers.
