Use Your Common Sense Day
Wanneer: jaarlijks, 4 november.
Use Your Common Sense Day is an annual day that takes place on November 4. This day reminds us to rely on our common sense.
Common sense
The day is a reference to Will Rogers (November 4, 1879 – August 15, 1935), who was born on the fourth day in November. The American actor and humorist became famous thanks to his statement “Common sense ain’t all that common.”
It is really no different from what people have been doing for centuries. Relying on common sense. People thought about that a very long time ago. Take the Greek philosopher Aristotle. He described it as the ability by which animals (including humans) process sensory perceptions, memories and imagination to arrive at different kinds of judgements. Is that still how we see it? Not quite, these days common sense is more about a certain level of knowledge and judgment. It does not even require a high level of intelligence. Think of it as practical knowledge and judgment. With which you should ultimately be able to live a safe life. Barring unforeseen circumstances, of course. You have no control over that.
Origin of the day
The idea for the day came from Bud Bilanich, author, motivational speaker and career mentor, among others. The day first took shape in 2015, to raise awareness about using common sense and encouraging people to do so more often. Dwell on the simple yet essential skills that help us get through life safely and wisely.
The dah can also be used to draw attention to the importance of common sense in public debate and decision-making. It is an opportunity to reflect on how we process information and make decisions, and to highlight the importance of critical thinking and logic.
Summary
In summary, Use Your Common Sense Day is a day to raise awareness about the importance of common sense in our lives. It is a call to return to the basics of practical knowledge and judgement and to appreciate and apply the wisdom we all possess. It is a day to celebrate that, despite the complexity of the world, common sense can help us make better choices and lead safer and more successful lives.
