On the third Saturday in September, software freedom takes centre stage as it is Software Freedom Day. The day is there to promote free software and open-source software.
Origin
The day is an initiative of the Digital Freedom Foundation (DFF) and Software Freedom International (SFI). The first time the day took place was on August 28, 2004. Only in 2007 was it decided that the day would henceforth take place on the third Saturday in September.
About this day
The day aims to draw attention to free software and open-source software as alternatives to paid software. In addition, to the challenges these software makers face in competing with non-free software providers. The day also aims to attract sponsors for new projects and ideas.
