Lesbian Visibility Day

About this day
The Lesbian Visibility Week or Week of Lesbian Visibility begins with this day, followed by the week. The unusual thing is that the week was there before the day. The week was celebrated annually in West Hollywood (California, US) in the 1990s (1990-1992). It stemmed from frustration among women from the lesbian community. One did not feel seen among all the men. The focus was mainly on men and their events. Something had to be done about that, hence a special week. This led to a kick-off of that special week on 26 April. That was thanks to DIVA Magazine.
From this point on, things can get confusing. There is also such a thing as International Lesbian Day. That day is set for 8 October. So isn’t that the same thing? Actually, no. As long as there is no equality and as long as some people still believe that discrimination and hatred are allowed. More importantly, as long as girls and women from the community itself experience a sense of unease, and insecurity and even face violence, days like these are desperately needed. On the other hand, on different days, it is also necessary to think about such issues. Besides, days like these are hard reminders of things that are wrong and in need of change.
Let’s face it, no one wants to be invisible. That’s what this day is all about. Being visible. Visible to show that things should be different. That freedom counts and that freedom is for everyone.
