On July 16, it’s International Drag Day. This annual day is here to reflect on the rich (sub)culture of drag and everything related to it. It is also a good time for awareness-raising, as drags often face a lot of misunderstanding, hatred, discrimination and violence.
International Drag Dag is more than what is described just now. It’s also a day that celebrates and honors the art of drag performance, the artistry, courage and creativity worldwide.
It is tempting to embark on a treatise on the hatred the drags face. About the terrible laws being passed in the United States. About the bans enacted or contemplated in other parts of the world. About non-existent links being made by opponents. That can be explored more deeply. Just not today. At least not in this entry. International Drag Day was founded by Adam Stewart in 2009 through his fan page for Drag queens on Facebook. The main objective of this day is to provide Drag artists with a platform to showcase their creativity and culture appropriately.
