International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples
When: Annually, August 9.
The United Nations (UN) has declared August 9 as the day of focus for indigenous peoples on all continents. This is the day known as International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.
About the name
The day is sometimes referred to as International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples or Indigenous Day. The UN retains the name International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.
Resolution 49/214
The day has existed since 1994 and became a reality thanks to Resolution 49/214. By the way, this is not the only day that calls attention to indigenous peoples. Consider the days that focus on the indigenous people of North America. These are days with a local character (on that continent).
Indigenous peoples
Globally, more than 476 million people in 90 different countries are affected. Although many people are involved, this concerns “only” five per cent of the world’s population. Then, in quite a few cases, it concerns the poorest populations. Groups that are under pressure and that is in part an explanation for why the number is so low thus. Because these population groups are under threat.
The UN has made available a website on this topic, and thus on this day, entitled International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, named after the name of this day.
