International Day of Peace
When: Annually, September 21.
The International Day of Peace is perhaps one of the most wryly special days devised by the United Nations. Conceived in 1981, the day coincides with the start of Peace Week by PAX, an international peace organisation.
Origin
The day is a consequence of Resolution 36/67 adopted in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. The resolution was made 21 September henceforth the International Day of Peace. It is a day that is immediately the opening day of the UN General Assembly, which has taken place on this day since 2001, thanks to another resolution 55/282.
The day coincides with the start of PAX’s Peace Week. This organisation has been in existence since 1967.
Purpose
The day’s purpose is to draw attention to (world) peace. Not only that, but the aim is also to achieve a global ceasefire. In addition, non-violence is at the heart of this day, along with conflict management.
What makes the day sour is that it has failed to achieve its goals since 1981.
More information
Every year, the UN chooses a separate theme for the day. You can read exactly what theme this is on the website offered by the UN under the name International Day of Peace, 21 September.
