The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is an annual day on 17 October dedicated to poverty alleviation worldwide. The day is an initiative of the United Nations (UN) through Resolution A/47/721. Another name for this day is World Poverty Day.

International Committee for October 17

One organisation important to this day is the International Committee for October 17, whose name is a reference to an event closely linked to this day.
On 17 October 1987, as many as 100,000 people gathered in Paris to draw attention to poverty, hunger and violence in the world. The day would later become World Poverty Day. This would happen after the UN established the day as such. This happened in 1992.
The day is one of awareness. How can we as a world solve poverty on this planet? What is needed to do so? It is a day of awareness and this day will exist as long as there is poverty in the world.
Every year, October 17 is a reminder that we have still not succeeded in solving world poverty.

More information

More information on the committee is available through the website overcomingpoverty.org. The UN’s own information is available via this website. The UN’s special goals for the period between 2018 and 2027 when it comes to poverty reduction are described on the website of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Poverty). The only question is whether these targets will ever be met.
