The United Nations (UN) declared September 12 as a day to reflect on cooperation between countries located in the southern part of the world. This is a day that includes cooperation between countries in economics and politics. The day is known as the International Day for South-South Cooperation.

About the South-South Cooperation

United Nations South-South cooperation is a fundamental aspect of international cooperation, aimed at sharing resources, knowledge and technical expertise among developing countries. By drawing on their respective strengths, developing countries can address common challenges and achieve shared goals.
An important part of cooperation is to promote international trade and help developing countries increase exports. This should lead to an open and fair rules-based universal trading system from which all can benefit.
Furthermore, the aim is to improve cooperation between countries not affiliated to it. So consider this one as improving cooperation between the global south and north.

Why is this collaboration necessary?

Countries in this (large) region have common challenges to solve. Be it climate change, solving food issues or political challenges. By pairing countries with relatively rich ones, the UN hopes that it will be possible to find solutions together. In doing so, you have a clearer voice together than one country alone.
