INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY (OCTOBER 22)
WHEN: ANNUALLY, JUNE 28 AND OCTOBER 22.
TWICE A YEAR IT IS CAPS LOCK DAY. THE FIRST VERSION OF CAPS LOCK DAY TOOK PLACE IN 2000 AND THAT DAY WAS SET ON 22 OCTOBER. SO THAT MAKES 22 OCTOBER THE ORIGINAL CAPS LOCK DAY.
A DETAILED EXPLANATION OF CAPS LOCK DAY CAN BE FOUND ON THE CAPS LOCK DAY PAGE OF JUNE 28. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THIS DATE IS MORE IMPORTANT.
CAPS LOCK DAY HAS NOW BECOME A SOURCE OF DISCUSSION. LOGICAL, BECAUSE WHAT TO DO WITH THIS DAY?
Selective use
All in capitals, as above? The mention of 28 June is even more composed of capital letters. While the day is not even about that. Instead, it is about selective use. How exactly do you make sure you don’t “shout” in your online expressions?
Remember that during the introduction of (International) Caps Lock Day, websites were designed differently. In some cases, website builders deliberately used flashing text and lots of capital. In e-mails and newsletters, they also used capital letters. This was not nearly as bad as when someone was angry. Receiving an e-mail with only capital letters is like someone shouting at you. That is still the case. It’s just not neat.
Of course, on two days in the year, you can joke about it. As was done in part of these two entries. On the other hand, the message is clear: Caps Lock Day contains a surely serious message. It is perhaps too easily overlooked.
AAN DE ANDERE KANT, CAPS LOCK DAY IS OOK EEN EXCUUS OM JE EVEN TE LATEN GAAN!
