Hardware Freedom Day is an annual day on the third Saturday in April. The focus then is on open standards in hardware.

Origin and purpose

Hardware Freedom Day was first organised on April 20, 2013. The aim was and is to draw attention to open standards beyond files or software. Hardware should not be skipped. Universal plugs are a good example. Better said perhaps: a bad example. The lack of that open standard allowed a proliferation of different types of models. Until, within the European Union, the European Commission intervened. There had to be a standard and that became USB-C. A logical choice, as long as no technical developments are followed to justify another option.
It is a day that may not yet be carried by all companies. Maybe the day is limited to certain sectors. Maybe even to research and education. Perhaps that is something that is going to change. Hardware freedom can be important in a world where certain freedoms cannot be taken for granted.
