Dutch National Day Against Bullying
Organizer
Stichting Stop Pesten Nu
When: annually, 19 April.
Stichting Stop Pesten NU (English: Stop Bullying NOW Foundation) has declared April 19 as the Dutch National Day Against Bullying. With this day, they want to draw attention to bullying behaviour in the classroom, at work, in sports, in the retirement home or any other place. This is because bullying has a major impact on the lives of people it happens to.
All forms of bullying
On this day, the foundation calls attention to all forms of bullying. Whether it takes place offline or online. In any form.
Sometimes people don’t even realise it is bullying behaviour. Then it is ‘just’ a joke. That joke is not a joke at all. Especially not when it is repeated over and over again. Day in, day out. A month after the moon. Sometimes years in a row.
Not everyone is a “bully.” So some initiate it and the “followers. Those are just as bad. Instead of condemning the behaviour, they (perhaps only after a while) just join in. You can read more about it via the foundation’s special page on the subject. By the way, this foundation does more than just organise the National Day Against Bullying. If you want to know what else they do, see this page.
Not only children
Bullying is not something that is only tied to children. It does not only happen to children. We need to get rid of this myth. It happens to adults too. Nor is it only tied to a particular group. It is a broad social problem, with major consequences. Even in later life. Sometimes it can take up to years before the victim even dares to talk about it. In the most distressing cases, it can lead to avoidance of certain situations, fear of failure and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In most cases, the persons guilty of this bullying behaviour do not realise this or do not want to realise it. This trauma is not relevant or important.
Stand up against bullying
Stand up against bullying. Not just today. Think about bullying today so you can say no to bullying tomorrow and the days after.

Figures...
One in five children and adults at a sports club is a victim of bullying behaviour. At work, one in eight employees are victims of bullying. In education, things are not much better either. The LGBT+ community in particular suffers. These pupils are up to twice as likely to be bullied. In primary schools, one in ten children experience bullying. In secondary schools, it is one in 20 children. When you look at online activities, the number is much higher: one in five young people are victims of it.
At further education colleges (in Dutch: MBO, HBO and WO), seven per cent of students are bullied.
Older people may become wiser, right? Well, wrong! In residential care homes for seniors, the number of people being bullied is one in five. Frighteningly high, in other words.
