The term ‘night’ has a broad definition in this case, as it refers to the period from about 9.30pm to about 1.30 am. We are talking about December 24 and December 25 and this is the period between Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. A period during which religious services take centre stage.

Service in St Peter's Basilica

The best-known Christmas Eve service, actually a Christmas (without a capital letter) is the one held by the Pope in St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Although there were once celebrations there that started at midnight, that is no longer the case. Services start at 10 pm. So actually it does involve a Christmas Mass. It is just not a midnight mass. It is about an evening mass.
