About the region classification in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is divided into regions when it comes to education. The Central Netherlands, North Netherlands and South Netherlands regions all have different schedules for certain school holidays. This was started by the Dutch government in the 1990s to spread the holidays. This prevented congestion on the roads to holiday destinations and an economy that came to a standstill during certain periods. Holiday staggering was first implemented during the holiday period in the summer months. Later, other holidays also became part of the holiday staggering scheme.

Aster or All Saints holiday1

Whatever name you want to use for this holiday: aster holiday, All Saints holiday (because of its relationship with All Saints) or simply an autumn holiday. It is a holiday for primary and secondary school students. Several MBO2 institutions also participate in this holiday, but not every institution.
When it comes to length, schools may choose how long it lasts. Only, the holiday must not exceed two weeks. However, compensation must take place at other times. For instance, by cancelling study days or extra teaching hours at other times.

Government is in the lead

Remember, the information on this website is informative since the government of the Netherlands is in the lead. The information provided on the official website therefore is leading.  For example, some entries have the status ‘provisional,’ while others have been given the status ‘final’. So always check whether a particular holiday (period) was given a status of ‘final’. That information/status can be found via the central government website (title: Overzicht Vakanties per schooljaar. The automatic translated version of that page).

In many cases, holidays with voorlopig (provisional) status do become definitief (final).
