Autumn Holidays The Dutch Central Region is the holiday (vacation) in the autumn every year also known as the Aster vacation or All Saints holiday. This holiday also falls under the holiday staggering (in Dutch: vakantiespreiding) in the Netherlands, therefore, the region Midden Nederland (central region). This autumn holiday is in October annually.
About the region classification in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is divided into regions when it comes to education. The Central Netherlands, North Netherlands and South Netherlands regions all have different schedules for certain school holidays. This was started by the Dutch government in the 1990s to spread the holidays. This prevented congestion on the roads to holiday destinations and an economy that came to a standstill during certain periods. Holiday staggering was first implemented during the holiday period in the summer months. Later, other holidays also became part of the holiday staggering scheme.
No mandatory holiday staggering
Students in primary, secondary and some parts of secondary vocational education have one or two weeks’ holiday during this period. Schools are free to fill the period themselves. By default, the period is one week. If they choose to give more than one week off, the hours must be compensated at another time.
Astral or All Saints holiday1
The name asterisk holiday is the obsolete name used for this holiday. The name All Saints’ holiday is the name mainly used in Flanders. The holiday there falls mainly in the period preceding or during All Saints’ Day.
