Achtergrondinformatie
The Pride March is a reference to the events of the 1970s. More so than the Canal Parade. That boat parade was first organised in 1996. It was a precursor to the Canal Parade as it was to take place during the 1998 Gay Games. In the bid book, the organisers had included the Canal Parade and now it was time to show whether they could do it.
“Roze Zaterdag” (in English: Pink Saturday) always occurred in Amsterdam between 1977 and 1980. In 1981, it was decided to choose a changing city every year. The first Pink Saturday took place on 25 June and the International Lesbian Alliance was responsible for it. The organisation showed solidarity with the situation in the United States. There, Anita Bryant came out against gay rights in Miami, Florida. The city council determined that gays deserved equal treatment. Bryant launched a campaign, warning of a “danger” posed by male members of the LGBT+ community. Children would fall prey to men. Something that was not new, as various religious movements had warned about this several times over the centuries. They would continue to do so after the 1970s. Today, people still warn about this. About this non-existent danger. Consider, for example, how some individuals or groups speak about transgender people.
Pride Walk
To commemorate the events of Saturday 25 June 1977, a Pride March is being organised during Pride Amsterdam, about these events 47 years ago. The comparison with the Pride Walk of 20 July only intrudes. Pride Amsterdam does not organise that Pride Walk. Queer Amsterdam is responsible for organising the Pride Walk.
