GOOD NEWS, BECAUSE IT’S 28 JUNE! SO IT’S CAPS LOCK DAY. A DAY LONG OF CAPS LOCK, NET AS IT MAY BE ON 22 OKTOBER. AS THAT IS ALSO WHEN IT IS CAPS LOCK DAY OR INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY. Is it only meant to be, all those capitals?
IT IS SAID THAT IT IS ALLOWED TO SHOUT ELECTRONICALLY ON CAPS LOCKS DAY. IF YOU USE ONLY CAPITALS, THIS IS EQUIVALENT TO (DIGITAL) SHOUTING. AT LEAST, BASED ON NETIQUETTE. THAT’S THE CONFLATION OF NETWORK AND ETIQUETTE.

IS IT OK THAT ALL POSTS AND PAGES ON THIS WEBSITE WOULD CONSIST OF CAPITAL LETTERS? FOR NOW, IT’S FUNNY, IN OTHER CASES IT WOULD BE WEIRD. SERIOUS TOPICS MIGHT COME ACROSS AS A LOT LESS SERIOUS. CERTAIN MESSAGES WOULD COME ACROSS AS ‘SHOUTY’ WHEN THIS WOULD NOT BE INTENDED.
COMPARE IT TO ‘REAL’ LIFE. SAYING ‘I LOVE YOU’ SOUNDS A LOT MORE LOVING WHEN YOU EXPRESS IT IN A LOVING WAY. NOT WHEN YOU SHOUT IT OUT, RIGHT?

WHEN IT COMES TO E-MAILS, SCREAMING E-MAILS WITH CAPITAL LETTERS ARE NOT ACCEPTED. LET’S FACE IT, THAT TOO COMES ACROSS A CERTAIN WAY. RATHER ANGRY OR AGGRESSIVE PERHAPS. THE SAME CAN BE SAID FOR POSTS ON SOCIALS.
WHAT ABOUT THIS POST/MENTION? SO WHY THIS INFORMATION IN CAPITAL LETTERS?
Because it is an overreaction. Because it shows that it would be allowed on this day. When you think about it carefully, it is actually something that is curious. Then it is actually something that is not right at all. Maybe that is precisely something you should really think about today.
Using Caps Lock
How often do you find yourself using Caps Lock? How often do you find yourself using sentences with only capital letters? Even when you think you should be allowed to on a day like today. A day when you would only be allowed to type in capital letters. That would be the thinking behind this day.
The day originated around the year 2000. Back then, it was common for people to use this function key regularly. So often, that it became a routine for some people. People used this digital way of communicating as if it were something normal. Just remember that it is not. Take a look at the text above now: that just looks “shouty”, doesn’t it? To say the least, it all looks very weird. This is not the way we communicate. This would be equivalent to a text with no capitals or punctuation.
The real idea behind Caps Lock Day, as fun as it is to capitalise on it, is that the day is there to draw attention to an important issue. That is avoiding that Caps Lock in the first place. Not only that, but the Shift key produces the same result. The underlying idea: stop “shouting.” What exactly does that mean you can then fill in yourself. It is best to convey a message differently. A more creative way or a more reasoned way.

Why two days?
Originally, there was just one Caps Lock Day and it took place on 22 October of each year. In memory of Billy Mays (20 July 1958 – 28 June 2009), his death anniversary was kept as the new, second Caps Lock Day. Mays became known for selling products on television in the United States.
The original Caps Lock Day had been around since 2000 and was conceived by Derek Arnold.
